Contrary to first impressions upon entering our gorgeous venue, the building in which 465 The Avenue resides is not historical. In fact it was built 10 years ago, in 2013, to house the baby sister venue of owner Andrew Utiger’s North Sydney venue, The Treehouse.

Andrew has been involved in the industry for over 30 years and, with his European heritage in mind, he designed this building with the help of Altis Architects. The brick walls, heavy red velvet curtains, wooden furniture, leather booth seating, tungsten lights and dash of greenery all work together to compose an atmosphere reminiscent of the 1920’s Weimar entertainment era. This impression is stoked further by the presence of the enormous crystal chandelier, suspended above the restaurant area, and the brass instrument art instalment, greeting you upon entry.

Though the current building is not historic, the site upon which it sits did indeed once house The Chatswood Kings Theatre. This was built and operated by the small chain of Kings Theatres around the Sydney suburbs. It opened on 24th July 1936, providing seating for 700 in the stalls and 300 in the circle. The Theatre was closed on 24th March 1983 and demolished within days, despite a fierce campaign waged by a local student to save it.

The silver lining to destroying this part of Chatswood’s cultural history is that, for the last decade, people have been able to enjoy fabulous food and drinks in this lovely venue of ours.

Here’s to another decade and more!
